Autism Awareness for First Responders
Knowledge is power.
Service Description
The Autism Awareness for First Responders course equips law enforcement officers with essential skills to safely and effectively interact with individuals on the autism spectrum (ASD). This training focuses on helping officers recognize neurodivergent behaviors, communicate appropriately, and apply proven de-escalation techniques to prevent unnecessary escalation. By understanding the difference between autism-related behaviors and intentional non-compliance, officers can reduce high-risk encounters, improve safety outcomes, and build stronger community trust. Why This Training Matters • 1 in 31 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism—and that number continues to rise. • Law enforcement officers are 7 times more likely to encounter individuals with autism than the general public. • Without proper training, these interactions can escalate quickly, potentially resulting in wrongful arrests, injuries, or tragic outcomes. What Participants Will Learn • How to recognize common signs and behavioral patterns associated with autism • How to identify sensory overload and meltdown responses • Effective de-escalation strategies tailored to neurodivergent individuals • Verbal and non-verbal communication techniques • Key criminal, civil, and administrative considerations regarding use of force • Strategies for building trust and strengthening relationships within the community
